FUMC VISION AND MISSION

Our Vision and our image for ministry is the CORNERSTONE.  (Ephesians 2:20). “Jesus Christ is the Cornerstone”. Christ is the foundation of all we share, all we do, all we dream together. We are blessed to have a beautifully renovated stone church on the corner, which stands as a symbol of our open doors to Mattoon’s diverse population. We are known for our community outreach and assistance, for our music and worship, for the power of our prayers in people’s lives, and for our hospitality and acceptance.

Our Mission
statement reflects these same priorities: “Building lives and community on Jesus Christ the cornerstone…through worship, fellowship, music, discipleship, outreach and service.”

Our Ministry Task
is to make disciples for Jesus Christ.  (Matthew 28:19-20).  It is why we are here. FUMC’s New Streams Team (visioning group) has been studying what it means today to be and become a disciple of Christ. Here is the challenge:

Stained Glass - JesusA MODERN DISCIPLE IS BEING….

CALLED to be on a lifetime journey of deepening relationship with Jesus Christ;
FORMED spiritually in community with other believers through the practice of spiritual disciplines;
TRANSFORMED by God’s love into more Christ-like living;
EMPOWERED by the Holy Spirit and given authority to make disciples of others by teaching, healing, leading, serving, encouraging and doing;
SENT OUT to bear witness to the Truth in the confident hope that the world is being transformed through Jesus Christ.
                     Are you a disciple?

OUR BELIEFS

Faith is not just about God. It is also about us. We live out of our understanding of who we are in relationship to God, to one another, and to the world.

The Christian faith is grounded in the love and grace of God, experienced through Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Christian life is our response to God’s love and grace. The church calls our response to God Christian discipleship. Discipleship focuses on actively following in the footsteps of Jesus. As Christian disciples, we are not passive spectators but energetic participants in God’s activity in the world.

Because of what God has done for us, we offer our lives back to God. We order our lives in ways that embody Christ’s ministry in our families, workplaces, communities, and the world.

Discipleship is about loving God….It is more than an acknowledgement of God’s existence or a statement of belief regarding God. It is total devotion, head-over-heals-in-love-with adoration. It is the deep desire to know God, to be one with God, and to worship God.
