Midweek Update - July 28, 2010
Pastor's Notes
Would you forgive me for boasting a
little bit this week? I just have to say I am proud of the way the
people of FUMC of Mattoon have responded to our recent efforts to
connect with the community. You represent Christ to the people of
Mattoon and Coles County in many ways during the week. Most of what you
do in that regard I don't even know about -- although God knows. But I
do know a few things and want to share my pride in them with you.
This year the people of FUMC, led by the Communications Team, made
an effort to be visible in witnessing to our presence and Christ in the
Bagel Fest. We had a booth where we sold water and soft drinks at a
discount price while providing information on the church. We did a
float for the church with walkers handing out cold water with
information on the church and registration forms for a drawing. We got
a broad level of participation from church people, some attention from
the local press, and a nice data base of people for future mailings. I
have no idea exactly how many were involved in total by the time you
count donations of water, soft drinks and cash, participation in the
booth, constructing the float, walking in the parade and all. All I
know is that a significant percentage of the church responded to our
call for volunteers. May God bless you for that.
Second, several members of our Fruitful Congregations and New
Streams group put together a Parents Night Out event. With the help of
our youth and other adults they got the word out to church people and
participants at VBS that there would be a parents night out on July 23.
They ended up with 15 children, including a mix from within and outside
of the church. There was a good response from the youth and adults in
making it a fun event for the kids. The hope is to repeat this as a way
to minister to single parents as well as couples with children.
All of this went on with our usual attention to worship, education,
outreach, assistance, Vacation Bible School, and all the other things we
do as a church. With the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit we can
lift high the name of Christ and make Mattoon a better place to live.
Keep up the good work folks!

This year at Annual
Conference bishop's cabinet called upon the people of our churches to
commit the first Thursday of
every month to a time of
humble fasting and prayer for renewal. The Gospels tell us that Jesus
practiced the combination of fasting and prayer before making big
decisions in his ministry. It is a way of helping us to focus upon the
spiritual side of reality by removing our focus from the physical for a
short period.
Would you join me and others in our Methodist
connection in this fast? I leave up to you the type of fast you prefer.
For some a liquid diet works best. Some may keep the fast for 24
hours while others may fast from one meal during the day. The details
are not as important as the commitment to focus upon praying for our
church, our mission, and the people of our community. We need the power
of God at work in our lives and our church. Will you join me in crying
out to our Heavenly Father to pour his power out upon us?
If my people, who
are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face
and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will
forgive their sin and will heal their land.
